I was reading through the ingredients of my all time favorite makeup product today and I was shocked at what I found! I love my lip and cheek stain, it’s my favorite makeup product ever but I don’t think I can use it anymore, the potential health effects are just too scary - cancer being one of them.
I know you’re probably thinking that I’m crazy and paranoid, but really I’m not. You can take a look for yourself. The Body Shop very kindly lists ingredients for all their products on their website. All you need is to look up the ingredients to see for yourself. Even their products that they advertised as ‘Specialist Skincare Powered By Nature’ contain a heap of questionable and even proven bad ingredients.
The Body Shop is great how they’re against animal testing, they support community trade, activate self esteem, defend human rights, and apparantly protect our planet …but even though that’s all great and I’d love to support them because of it, I just can’t see why they put all those really bad chemicals into their products. This topic is a lot more serious than you think, and I doubt my video really does the topic enough justice. Habitual acne picking is a big problem. In fact, it has been linked to obsessive compulsive disorder. First, have a look at my video:
I encourage you to visit the course if you haven’t already done so. The course is very long so you’ll need to take your time to read it, as in a few days at least.
You’ve probably heard me talk about Bel a lot, that’s because she gives such great advice. Bel is a beauty therapist in Melbourne (Australia) and head therapist and founder of Pure Citta. Bel is trained in Aromatherapy, Beauty and Remedial Massage - so if you’re in Melbourne you definitely need to check Pure Citta out for a massage and some beauty treatments.
Bel was kind enough to answer a few skin care and acne questions for the blog. I learnt a lot from her answers, and I’m sure you will too

Why is it important to use natural skin care when treating acne?
Unfortunately, the majority of skin care products on the market consist largely if not solely, on man made synthetic chemicals such as mineral oil and other highly processed and contaminated ingredients. While the shift towards natural and organic skin care may appear to many to be over the top hype or merely a trend in the consumer market, its popularity is growing for a reason - medical support. Constant tests and research is being done on current popular ingredients and preservatives, with huge amounts of evidence coming up to support the claims that petrochemicals cause much more damage to the skin, body, wellbeing and the environment, than they do good. I find it really hard to choose a mineral makeup brand because there are just so many available. Bel wrote a tip in the acne & makeup page about a great new line called Inika, which she thinks is the best mineral makeup she’s tried yet.
Sorry Bel, but I was thinking ‘Oh yeah, another one’. But they do have a very convincing website. I LOVE it how they say their products are vegan friendly …although to be honest, I kind of thought all cruelty free makeup brands where? What ..do they put milk and eggs in them? Here’s some text from their website:
It is our mission to introduce the world to a new era in cosmetics, one where you don’t have to compromise color or performance, to be kind to your skin and gentle to the earth.
We have created pure and natural mineral cosmetics that are 100% certified Vegan and Cruelty Free and many of our ingredients are certified 100% Organic. Inika do not use potentially harmful chemicals, toxins, talc, bismuth oxychloride, parabens or GM ingredients.
Inika cosmetics are made of Australia - quite literaly made from the very rocks that form our land. Inika is so pure that it is actually good for your skin.
There are a few reasons why we get acne, and not all will fit with you. Why is it for example, that your friend with the beautiful clear skin can eat a ton of pizza and junk food while you get a breakout no matter what you eat. Some of us are just blessed with good skin from our genes and how our body works. Unfortunately for the rest of us keeping the blackheads and pimples away is a little harder (hey, that’s me).
You’re either prone to acne or you’re not. I could take two people with identical lifestyles, and one could have a face like a pizza whereas the other could have soft baby clear skin. If you’ve got it you’re just prone to it and unfortunately you’re going to have to work a little harder at maintaining healthy skin. But the good news is, at least as a whole you’ll become healthier and will reap additional benefits for leading a healthy lifestyle.
