Can Natural Skin Care Products Clear Acne?

Urgh, I know my videos are all talking heads which is getting really boring but trust me, I’m trying to think of some other way to convey this information. Maybe I’ll stand up next time ..

This is the first “Ask Fran” video. I answered Kevin’s question-

Q. So I commented on your update on the bee yummy and you mentioned in a comment that these products will not clear our acne(other than SA and BP).This is pretty contradicting to the thousands of products on the market so could you go into details about this?

Video summary

  • Most acne skin care products from the grocery store or pharmacy contain either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, both are medicated.
  • Natural skin care products will never be as strong as the medicated products so it’s unlikely they’ll completely clear moderate to severe acne without using holistic methods. This means you need to work on your insides as well as the outside to cure your acne!
  • I’m not saying you can’t cure your acne without using chemicals, I’m saying you definitely can, but you need to work on your body holistically. And of course please don’t see this as “too much work” because you’ll end up being a lot healthier for it!

Yeah .. it’s true about natural products … even some skins can be highly sensitive to them ! Mine was the Bee Yummy unfortunately …

Treating acne is not about just treating from the outside otherwise there would be a whole load more of acne than normal … I really truly and honestly believe this the gentler you are with your skin and the more you treat the acne from the inside getting to the root of the problem the better you will be in long run and the clearer your skin !

I love this website Fran you have been such an inspiration to me and I am so totally amazed of how healthy I have been of late … and of how good my skin is looking …

Thankyou so very much

Chrissi

Didn’t actually make the beginning of that last message very clear ! Natural products don’t work miracles but neither do artifical products … I find the stronger the product the more complications I get with my skin … the more natural I am … the less stuff I use .. the more healthier I am then the better my skin is overall ….. xx

Your video made me think of something I learned in microbi awhile back.

Because Bee Yummy is a moisturizer and most people put it all over their faces / necks every day (twice a day sometimes) wouldn’t the anti-bacterial properties in the product also affect the good bacteria that are always, naturally on your face? And because natural products are weaker wouldn’t it kill off the weak versions of the bad bacteria off, leaving the stronger ones to multiple and grow? Would that in turn cause something like a “super bug”?

Good question Izzy! Honestly I have no idea, we’ll need to find a scientist :)

sorry to bother you again , i keep asking questions !! but i was just wondering ; i have mild acne and its hormonal so it’s pretty hard to clear up . However , after reading your blogs about natural products that they are better, i have been turned to them , however this acne is clearly not going. I have a reigme ( all natural products ) but my skin isn’t looking any better. So i was wondering could BP be an option just for the area where i get acne or do you think BP is a bad idea in the first place? And i know you don’t like BP and many people say it is to harsh etc but would it be “ok” formy mild acne ? Thanks and again sorry to write so much :S

Hi Brett, it’s worth checking out the video I did a few months ago on BP ..or it may have been about proactiv - but they’re one and the same.

BP works BEST on young, oily skin so if that’s you, you could give it a go. Just be careful with it, at the first signs of drying, itching or stinging, ease off a bit. Also make sure you’re supporting your skins health with a good diet, plenty of water and a healing moisturizer.

Hi,
I’ve been using Origins products (facewash, exfoliant, day/night cream) for about 2-3 years now. At first i used Origins Perfect World for blemish prone skin. After a yearish, i felt it was too harsh on my skin. And caused inflammation. I switched to Origins Plantidote for sensitive skin which is alot more expensive than Perfect world. The lotion face wash is great because it doesn’t dry out my skin. Immediately my skin improved. However, now after using it for a year i’m finding my skin becomes very oily even within a couple of hours of washing. Origins says they’re all natural, but is it actually good? And is it worth the money?…

Hi Amy, have a look on http://www.makeupalley.com for reviews from others. I haven’t personally tried Origins myself.

hey amy, maybe u should try powdered milk to wash your face??!! hehes…though my skin gets oily after a few hours using that too, hmm…but i think milk may help cuz after afew months,, it worked for me and milk has ingredients inside that remove excess oil, yet moisturising the skin, calming it down, and promotes exfoliation of dead cells(:
its also really gentle on the skin, and economical.
hmm…if u have oily skin can try skimmed powdered milk?
for combination i think its whole milk.
i hope this helps(:

Hi Fran, i learnt a few weeks ago that Zinc can actually help with scarring and can even help with your acne. I’m using one at the moment called Zinc Fix it comes in an orange flavoured powder. How about i write down all the stuff on the bottle for you ? : Each 2.0 gram dose* contains: Ascorbic acid (Vit. C) 1000mg, Zinc Sulfate monohydrate 61.8mg, Equiv. Elemental Zinc 22.5mg, Magnesium phosphate 24.2mg, Equiv. Elemental Magnesium 5.0mg, Standardised extract equivalent to Dunaliella salina (fresh cell) 4.3mg, Equiv. carotenoids standardised to betacarotene 170 microgram, Pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin B6) 5.0mg.

Therapeutic applications:
- May assist the normal healthy immune system-reducing the severity and duration of colds.
- May reduce the frequency of upper respiratory tract infections in children.
- may assist management of minor wounds, cut, abrasions and scratches.
- Where a zinc deficiany exists, may assist in the healthy development of motor and attention skills in children.
- May help maintain healthy skin, hair and nails.

No added artificial flavouring, colouring or preservatives. Free from gluten, milk, eggs, waxes, yeast and salt.

I got this from a health food store for approx. $20
it was recommended to me and some of my scarring has gone.

Just thought that you might want to do some more research or something on this Fran :)

Oh and also, it tastes MUCH better mixed in with juice! I tried it just with water and it tasted pretty gross.

Fran,
I will pick up some tea tree oil as soon as I can. I used to use it as a spot treatment, but stopped for some reason. Maybe if I steam my face, it will work better.
Also, I was in my local health store a few days ago and I came across a tiny bottle that was for the treatment of mild/moderate acne. It said to take 2 drops orally every day. I didn’t purchase it, but I was considering trying it out. My acne is a lot better, but I still have a few breakouts on my forehead and chest. What do you think? Should I give it a try?

#15 Fran on 06.23.09 at 9:38 pm

Sierra, if it’s natural then it doesn’t hurt to try :)

Hi Fran! On this video you mentioned you were still looking for a deep cleaning cleanser…I currently use Tisserand Antibacterial Pure Vegetable soap. It contains organic tea tree oil, avocado, and sea buckthorne and was ‘prescribed’ to me by my naturopath for cleansing. I like it and it gets my skin very clean but does not irritate or dry out.
