Review: Miessence Garnet Exfoliant

miessence.jpgPrice: AU$26.32 (140g/4.9oz)
Rating: Rating: ★★★★★
Website: http://www.miessence.com
Ingredients: organic aloe vera leaf juice, alluvial almandite garnet, organic bitter orange extract, natural gum, organic lemon essential oil, organic grapefruit seed extract, organic bergamot essential oil, organic sweet orange essential oil

As you can see by my rating, I love this exfoliant. Miessence is proudly the worlds first internationally certified organic skin care range, and I’m quite proud that it’s an Australian (even Queensland!) brand.

I bought the garnet exfoliant out of a recommendation from a clear skin book by Karen Jessett from the UK. Karen had severe acne that she successfully treated by diet and natural skin care alone. It’s really quite amazing considering her dermatologist wanted to give her roaccutane. But that’s another post …

The main reason why I love this product is because it does a damn good job at exfoliating. It’s great on sensitive and acne prone skin, and does not leave my skin feeling tight or dry after I use it like some exfoliants can. Continue reading →

Product Review: Dr. Mist Body Hygiene Floatation Fluid Spray

drmist-bottles.jpg Price: AU$12.95 (50 mL bottle)
Rating: ★★★★½
Website: http://www.drmistspray.com/index.html
Ingredients: Treated Water, Potassium Sulphate, Sodium Chloride

If you’re wondering what on earth a ‘hygiene floatation fluid spray’ is - it’s a fancy name for body deodorant.

I had a break from using baking soda as a deodorant for a few days to try out Dr. Mist, and I have to say, this product is a lot better than I thought it would be. It did everything it promised on the bottle, it was fragrance free (and made me fragrance free!), didn’t stain my clothes, was colorless on my underarms and non-oily. I used it when I went rollerblading (the hottest and sweatiest I get) and it didn’t make me smell at all. I’d even say that this product works better than both the crystal deodorants I’ve used and the baking-soda.

The active ingredients in Dr. Mist are potassium sulphate and sodium chloride. Potassium sulphate is a naturally occurring mineral salt and sodium chloride is your common table salt which a lot of people use in their food. Both substances are perfectly safe to use on the skin, especially when they’re used in such a small dose as with Dr. Mist. Continue reading →

The Liver Cleansing Muesli, It Tastes Like Cardboard

liver cleansing muesliIf you enjoy eating soggy cardboard for breakfast then ‘The Liver Cleansing Muesli’ by Food for Health Life Food’ is for you.

My naturopath tells me that I have a lot of toxins in my liver (a post about this later) so I bought this muesli thinking yeah, this will be a great way to help cleanse all those toxins out. Until I actually ate it.

I have to give it credit, it is exceptionally healthy. It’s organic, and has no wheat, yeast, fruit, artificial colours, sweeteners, sugar or salt. Hmm, I guess that’s why it has no flavour either.

What it does contain is a heap of different seeds and grains. If you added honey and fruit I think the muesli probably wouldn’t taste that bad. Kind of like how you have to add stuff to porridge I guess.

Whether or not it actually cleanses my liver, well that one I’ll probably never know because I’m not going to be eating this cardboard long enough to find out.

Product review: Minerelle makeup

I discovered a new natural makeup brand while reading one of those free health magazines that’s always floating around outside my local health food store. Minerelle sparked my interest for a number of reasons – it was created and is made in Australia, is a natural product, is not tested on animals, and most importantly …is designed to cover acne or pimples, allergies, rosacea, sun damage, eczema, dermatitis, pigmentation and redness.

mainprod2.jpgWhen I first found out about this product my skin was probably in its worst acne state. The very expensive makeup brand that I was using at the time was making my skin break out even more. I felt like it was doing an okay job at covering my pimples but also doing an okay job at spreading them as well. A couple of natural foundation products I tried were thick and gluggy and felt like I was plastering stuff on my face and clogging up everything which felt really bad.

Product review: Banalasta

It’s about time I did a product review on one of my favourite body products, Banalasta. I’ve been using their moisturisers for years. Banalasta is Australian owned and grown, uses natural ingredients, is not tested on animals and has been really great for my skin.

banalasta.jpgBecause my skin is so sensitive to breakouts, I’m very careful about what I put on it. A have quite dry skin on my face, but I still find a lot of moisturisers can make my skin oily and shiny and clog my pores. I also wouldn’t touch any of the products you’d find in a grocery store because where I live, ALL of the products in large grocery stores are packed full of chemicals. There’s no way I’m putting chemicals on my face, near my eyes and my brain and well …just onto my body really.

daycream.jpgI discovered Banalasta through my sister, Gill, who found it looking for products that are natural and not tested on animals. Our favourite Banalasta product is the ‘hydrating day cream’ because it includes Eucalyptus Oil (grown on the Banalasta farm!). The Eucalyptus keeps out skin under control because the oil is anti-bacterial.

I’ve probably been using this product on and off for three or four years now. There’s been many occasions that I’ve run out of my Banalasta and forgotten to order more, so I’ve had to try another natural moisturiser. I’m yet to find one that’s as good, so I keep going back to it.

There’s a hydrating night cream as well as the day cream. I always have both on hand but I prefer the day cream because the shea butter in the night cream is a bit heavy and can cause me to break out if I use it over long periods of time. Gill finds she needs to use the night cream when she’s at work because the air conditioning really dries her skin out a lot.

Where to find Banalasta

You can only purchase Banalasta through their website or via mail order. They sell directly from the farm but that’s only good for those of you lucky enough to live close by. I’ve found their service is always fantastic and the staff are really friendly. The last couple of times I purchased products from them, they gave me an extra product for free.

If you visit their website you’ll find they have a huge range or products. I haven’t tried their premium range of skin care because the ingredients don’t seem as natural as their regular skin care range. I might get out my Chemical Maze book and look up all the ingredients some time just to check. The words ‘Premium Range’ sound much more luxurious!
