Product Review: Smooooth Legs Natural Hair Remover

smooth legsI got suckered into buying this terrible product at the Mind Body Spirit Festival on the weekend. I guess it serves me right for believing something so painless would work by actually removing the hair from the root. Lesson learned – there is no natural and painless way to remove hairs from the root.

Smooooth Legs hooked me in by their very clever demonstration. As I walked passed the stall I heard them explaining to women how their system removes hairs from the root so it’ll grow back slower and finer. And as I watched a demonstration I got hypnotized into trying it myself.

Luckily that day I was wearing jeans because my legs were, um, a little bit unkempt! So I actually had some hair to trial the product on. They gave me a VERY impressive demonstration which involved exfoliating my leg quite vigorously in a circular motion with what looks a lot like sandpaper. I was then told that you have to moisturize and they recommended to moisturize with their own product which of course they tried to sell me as well.

The part of my leg they exfoliated actually felt amazingly smooth so that sold me straight away. At that point I totally believed the product worked, and that my hair had been magically and painlessly pulled out from the root. This was enough to convince me to buy the product. Although I didn’t buy the moisturizer because it’s not natural.

But of course it was all too good to be true. I knew by that afternoon that the product was scammy as the patch they’d “removed my hair” from started to get prickly. If they’d actually removed my hair then it would take a couple of weeks to get to that prickly stage. Still I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt so I gave it a good go at home, but the results were even worse. Not only did I find it difficult to achieve that same smoothness that I experienced during the demonstration, but I found it a lot of work to remove all of my hair. In fact, I gave up not long after I’d started on the second leg. Honestly, shaving is a lot easier and quicker.

And then for the next couple of days my skin was very dry and irritated. I had to use a lot more moisturizer than usual and I even got a bit of an itchy rash in the areas that I’d used the product. It’s so not worth it.

I would definitely not recommend this product to anyone. I’m a bit sad it doesn’t work because it seemed like a great option. Even if it did just cut the hairs off like shaving does, I would have been happy to continue using it (because that would mean I could use it while watching a DVD), but the skin irritation just isn’t worth it.

So if you’re walking passed one of these Smooooth Legs stalls, don’t get suckered into it. Unless you want something that can “buff off” a few stray hairs in an emergency situation.

The Best Ever Natural Cleansing Scrub For All Skin Types

almond rose cleansing scrubThe problem with opening an online store is that I’m now collecting a lot products that I love and feel I can no longer live without. So you can just imagine next time I go traveling how big my cosmetics bag is going to be!

This Almond Rose Cleansing Scrub from Third Stone Botanicals is one of my new favorite products. I mix it in with my cleanser as an exfoliant. It’s all natural and full of loads of good stuff so I’m healing my skin while I’m exfoliating which is awesome.

I now sell this scrub in my online store, so you can get your own here. And of course in true style of my blog, here’s a video I recorded about it-

When I first used the scrub I tried mixing it with just water, but found it a little too drying on my skin. So I made a mix with my cleanser instead and then it was perfect. If you have oily skin then mixing it with water should be fine.

What I don’t like about this product is how I have to make a paste with water or cleanser before I use it (it comes in a powder form). I’m really lazy so I love to just grab a product while I’m in the shower. You can make the mix up while you’re in the shower (and err, yes I have done this before), but you absolutely don’t want to get any water in the jar because it will ruin the product for future use. Really, I just need to stop being so lazy.

What I love about this product is how it’s gentle enough to use every day as a cleansing scrub. Most scrubs and exfoliants are quite harsh so I wouldn’t normally use them more than 3 times a week, but this one is soft enough to use every day if you want to. And as I mentioned before, the healing ingredients are a huge bonus. It’s not often that I find a product that contains zeolite and brown rice flour!

Does The Dr Perricone Clear Skin Prescription Actually Work?

Dr Perricone's clear skin dietIt was about a year and a half ago now when I first laid eyes on The Clear Skin Prescription. I was moseying around a bookstore in the city feeling depressed about the condition of my skin when Dr Perricone’s book caught my eye like a little diamond sitting on the shelves in the well-being section.

I was so excited to discover a book that promised to give me a flawless complexion in just four short weeks! Finally a cure, finally a medical professional that not only promised a cure, but a number one New York Times Bestselling Author at that (so there must have been some proof to it).

What the Clear Skin Prescription is all about

Dr Perricone’s plan combines three tiers – a strict diet, a huge list of supplements and his own line of skin care. And no, his skin care is not natural. The products use both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide which are both the standard topical acne medications that both Proactiv and acne.org use, so I don’t think his skin care is really anything new.

Lets look at each tier more closely.

1. The diet

BananasThe diet is very strict, but you get to eat a lot of food so it’s nothing like Acne Free in 3 Days.

I do feel there is some value to it as long as you’re not vegetarian and you love eating fish because you’re required to eat a bit of meat and a lot of seafood. There are no alternatives provided for vegetarians or raw foodists either so it’s really an all or nothing thing. I was a strict vegetarian at the time of buying Dr Perricone’s book so I could not do the diet, simply because there was no substitute to the amount of meat that you’re required to eat.

However, I love how Dr Perricone dedicates an entire section in the book to explaining why the skin, acne and food are related (yes, he quotes scientific data). Continue reading →

Product Review: Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream Light

rose day cream lightPrice: US$39.95
Rating: ★★☆☆☆
Website: http://www.drhauschka.com/

I feel a little bad about writing a review on a skin care product that I don’t like so soon after writing about a product that I love, but I have had people asking about my experience with Dr. Hauschka’s moisturizer, and I guess that’s just the nature of a blog.

I actually wasn’t that excited about using Dr. Hauschka’s products in the first place, because I’d read so many mixed reviews on their skin care line – some people seem to love them, and some not so much.

I also knew that Dr. Hauschka’s philosophy was to use a lot of “healing” essential oils which I don’t like. I realize that essential oils can be at times very beneficial to the skin, but in my opinion (and from what I’ve learned since I’ve been immersed in the natural skin care industry), is that acne-prone skin just does not fit well with products made heavily with oils. Even oils that are non-comedogenic can sit too heavily on the skin and contribute to clogged pores and an acne breakout.

Of course I am a total believer of essential oils and how great they can be for the skin. But in my opinion they are only suited to mature skin types, or skin that is not in any way acne prone.

Product Review: Paula’s Choice 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel

Paula's Choice 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid GelPrice: USD$17.95 (118 mL)
Rating: ★★★★☆ (I took a star off for not being a natural product!)
Website: http://www.cosmeticscop.com/

I’ve been using a new product for a few weeks now, and it’s been working miracles on my skin. I didn’t want to tell you about it too early in case it stopped working so well, or in case it was just a coincidence that my skin was doing better, but I think it’s time that I share my thoughts and my success with this product.

Actually I’ve already mentioned it a lot in the High on Health forum and in some of my blog comments. It’s Paula’s Choice 2% BHA gel.

First, a little warning …

It’s important to note that this is NOT a natural product. So if you want to stick to a natural routine, then this product is best avoided.

BHA stands for ‘Beta Hydroxy Acid’ and it works by exfoliating the pores from deep inside the pore itself, instead of just on the surface like ‘regular’ exfoliators do. The active ingredient in Paula’s Choice BHA is Salicylic Acid which you may already have seen in a ton of other acne treatment products. Paula’s BHA supposedly has its Salicylic Acid at the perfect pH level to work properly, I don’t know weather this is true, but it seems to work well for me, and this product has great reviews from others that have used it on makeupalley.com

The gel also comes as a lotion if you prefer, and as a 1% which is a little gentler on the skin.

After using the product for a few days I realized that I should have bought the 1% because the 2% seems to be quite strong for my very sensitive and very dry skin. I can only use a very small amount each time (about half the size of a pea, yes I’m not exaggerating that …the bottle is going to last me years) and only once a day when the recommended use is twice daily. I found that if I used it twice a day my skin went a little pink and too dry. I’ve read posts in forums from beauty therapists who say that it’s bad to use BHA’s on your skin every single day, so I’m happy to use just a teeny tiny amount.

The directions on the bottle also recommend to use it underneath your moisturizer, but I found this to be too difficult. For some reason my moisturizer didn’t go on too well after I’d applied the BHA, even if I’d wait ten minutes after I applied the BHA, and …I don’t know, I just didn’t like it. So after I cleanse my face, I moisturize, then wait about half an hour before I apply the BHA. I wait for half an hour so my moisturizer has properly settled into my skin. Any earlier and it seems to make a bit of a strange mix of moisturizer and BHA on my skin.

I apply the BHA only once a day – at night.
