Chocolate Banana Smoothie

This is a smoothie I threw together today with what I could find in the kitchen. It tasted so good that I had to post the recipe.

This is a very easy smoothie that you can make yourself at home. If you use a milk alternative (like almond or soy milk), then it’s a very healthy drink for your body and for your skin that you can even have for breakfast.

Chocolate banana smoothie

Serves 1

1 cup of milk or milk substitute (my favorite is almond or oat milk)
1 banana
a small handful of blueberries
1/2 teaspoon of raw honey
1/2 teaspoon of cacao powder
a large pinch of shelled hemp seeds

Put all the ingredients into the blender, then blend until smooth.

This is probably going to sound really lame but… do you know how many calories this is? Anyways, i’m sure it tastes good i’ve always loved banana smoothies! I don’t have any shelled hemp seeds so i’ll probably be skipping that part but i can’t wait to try it out.

Hi Eddie, not a lame question :) but my take on calories is that it’s the wrong way to measure nutrition.

I measure foods by-

1) The amount of nutrients it contains (vitamins and minerals)
2) If it’s organic
3) If it’s raw
4) If it’s a whole food (unrefined and unprocessed)

So if I’m eating highly nutritious, organic whole foods that are unrefined and unprocessed, along with a good amount of raw foods …then calories don’t need to come into the equation.

Hey, i had never thought of it that way! So I kinda learned something new today :) I was just asking because my doctor suggested i gain some weight so for the past couple of weeks i’ve been getting kinda crazy on how many calories everything i eat has. Basically i’m supposed to eat a lot of foods like bread, pasta, and starchy foods like potatoes and things like that. I really didn’t mind until I signed up for your mini course and I found out that all those foods i’ve been eating can contribute to acne! agh. Oh well. I think i’d rather be thin and have a clear face than have a face full of pimples.

Your doctor really said that? Wow. A high carb diet isn’t good for you, and I’m not just talking about the skin.

I have some skinny male friends and there’s not a lot that works for them. They opt more for bulking up by eating health foods and protein. Do a google search for spirulina :)

Yeah he did. But he isn’t one of those “nice” doctors so yeah. I asked him once about what I could do to help clear my skin and he (in a sarcastic kind of way) said “just wash your face ten times a day” He’s old and might retire soon… so maybe that’s why he’s usually a little cranky. I’m not entirely sure how you can gain weight by eating health foods.. I guess you mean just eat tons of it? Oh, and thanks for the Spirulina tip. I’ll definetly look into it. And sorry for all of my questions.. i should have probably asked them in the forum and not on here huh?

Thanks for this! I absolutely love smoothies.
But then I was researching and I read that some fruits are bad for your skin? Like too much sugar in them? Is this true?
I usually have a banana, strawberry, blueberry, blackberry smoothie with soymilk.

Hi Fran, i see you are posting more and more recipes. That is great. Are you thinking of switching to a raw food diet?
I am trying to incorporare more raw foods in my diet as well, mostly green vegetables.

Dalaila- There is a lot of incorrect information on the net about fruits. If you have an overgrowth of Candida, and if that is a contributing factor to your acne, then eating an excess of fruits will make your skin worse (because of the natural sugars). If however you are completely clear of a Candida overgrowth, then you can eat any fruits you want without worrying about your skin.

Organic fruits are full of essential vitamins and minerals so go for it!

Rosy- I know, I’ve always had a passion for food so I can’t help posting about it. I should never say never, but I don’t know if I could ever do 100% raw. At the moment I’m just trying to incorporate more raw into my diet like you. I’m being careful with it though because I have too much Candida in my body. When I get back to Brisbane I’ll do a cleanse and then I can get into the raw a lot more :)

How do you actually know that you have Candida or let’s say an overgrowth of Candida? Did you get a blood test done?
Apparently it is quite common amongst people, but I guess many are just not aware of it.

Everybody has Candida (it’s impossible to get rid of completely), but an overgrowth is when it becomes a problem. I think the stats are like 85% of the population has a problem with it. I bought “The Body Ecology Diet” book and did the test in the front of the book. I only did half the test before my numbers were already at the ‘you definitely have an overgrowth’ category!

There are many, many symptoms that overlap with other conditions as well. But if you’ve taken antibiotics and/or the pill in the past, and have had a diet high in sugars and carbs then you’re already on your way.

If you want to be SURE, you can buy this book or there are many naturopaths out there who do tests.

Hey fran,

Is there any way we can make the smoothie without having the foamie top and if we leave out the hemp seeds do you think it will have a great impact on the flavor?

#12 Fran on 08.25.08 at 12:25 am

The hemp seeds don’t add flavor, but a lot of nutrition!

Hey Fran,
I was wondering does the cocoa powder have to be like a certain kind and like that bananas have to be organic?
And would it help if the milk was either skimmed or semi skimmed?
Thanks for the help

Holly

Hi Holly. Any cacao powder that you get from a health store should be okay. Look for cold compressed. And of course, everything is so much better organic.
