Sometimes I wish I could go back to the beginning of when my acne got bad and do it all over again. But this time would be different because I’d be armed with the knowledge that I have now. I have made some of the dumbest mistakes with my treatment …even things that people told me not to do but I didn’t listen to them because they didn’t have acne so I thought they didn’t know what they were talking about. Sounds stupid I know.
Here is one of the biggest mistakes I made:
Thanks for watching.

i also have cosmetic acne tooo!!!
huhuhuhuhu i dried my face too. im too dried up now… what do you suggest i do??
Well, for starters stop using anything that dries your skin out. And start using a very gentle cleanser and moisturizer. For prention, regularly exfoliate your skin. And you can use a spot treatment on your inflammations.
uhm.. im on treatmetn with a topic ointment with BP the Duac, do you know it and also tretinoin… Retin A. have you gone to a derm before? and what did he prescribed you? did it work?
Hi Erika, I’ve been to the dermatologist once and it didn’t work out so well, he gave me accutane which was overkill for my skin so I stopped taking it after 6 days.
All of those topicals you’re using a very drying to the skin so be careful with them. Keep your dermatologist updated on your side effects and progress and consult them straight away if your skin gets too dry.
Hi Fran,
I am a big fan of your website.. !! Can you please give me individual advice..??
I am Asian, living in New Zealand. Since 2002 I started to have few acnes and it build up gradually. I started treatment by going to see dermatologist and he prescribed me the roaccutane which gave me lots of side effect for 6 months and acne didn’t gone completely. After knowing that some people got liver damage from roaccutane then I quit. I tried BP and it irritated me a lot, I tried pro-activ recently and it super damage and cause me more acne. I am really hurt and suffer carrying acne on my face all the time. Why? I eat well, sleep well, exercise well. I am thinking of going to see skin institution. See the link

What do you think of this??? Now I am using banalysta that you recommended and wash my face with cetaphil for oily skin. Using natural foundation and still can’t clear my acne. 7 years with acne isn’t fun and it makes my whole 20’s life under pressure and unhappy. Do you have any solution?
Hi kanyakit, I’m happy to help, but could you please post this into the forum so we can have a conversation in there (so it can benefit others and so we have more room to write
) –

Hey Fran,
My acne is clearing up pretty well but not fully, but thats not my problem.
I had this huge problem picking and now I have black dots that wont go away… and theres a lot on my forehead..
They’re not blackheads, i think they’re just scars but it doesn’t go deep in the skin nor does it inflammate.
Any advice on how to get rid of them and please make it accurate, even if it takes a long time, because I don’t want to make it dissapear after one night because it will obviously have side effects…
I just want to fully get rid of my acne and make it look like I had none ever…
So… An advice?
Hi Jon, if they’re just acne pigmentation scars then they will go away with time. Unfortunately patience and leaving them alone is the best cure.
There are a lot of discussions about acne scars in the forum, so do a search in there if you want to find out more:

If you have any specific acne questions, you can ask them in the forums: http://www.highonhealth.org/forums/
By the way, I love those little hearts, so cute! ♥♥
Hi, Fran !
How to make these cute hearts??
Anyways, I’ve noticed that my acne is stress related and..coffee related.
You have discussed so much on your website and we are so grateful for this.
I am a total improvisator and experimentalist – unfortunately and I agree that as soon as I stop overdoing and just stick to simplicity – everything on my face looks quiet.
Yesterday I took long bath with clay mask on my face, chest and on my head scalp ( on most of the hair as well ).
I mixed : green +red +water+ Apple Cider Vinegar.
When I run my water through the shower, while I’m in the tub and the shower curtain is closed I give myself nice spa!
My blackheads were gone after 1/2 hour!
I consider this method as one of the best ones plus one of the cheapest ones!
Love the post!
i’m 16
i starded using skin care products since february 2009
in that time i thought i had dry skin and that was far away from being sensitive but i guess i never had reactions to skincare products because i never used them.before i started on skincare i had NEVER used a cleanser or anything like that,i think i either wash my face by letting the water clean it while i was showering or just put regular bar soap, i guess that explains why i had dry skin and also i remember it was dull looking.the only skin care product i use was a pond’s moisturizer and i never had a problem with it.
but since feb i started experementing with driffrent kind of cleansers and scrubs,i even used a microdermabrasion kit then i started to try out makeup (but i was just putting it on and take it off right away so idk if that was the problem) and i think that’s when i starded breaking out the worse so i emidiatly stop using any kind of makeup even mascara everything, but no i was still breaking out and i still am.
know my skin is oily and some parts dry i have papules whiteheads pustules and acne marks and sensitive
what i’m doing right now is washing my face with water apply a benzol poroxide to acne and then a bha hydrating acne treatment
Hey Fran, I am now taking antibiotics for my acne. Everyone that took them ( that I know ) told me it worked a lot for them and that it made their acne go away. Do you think it will make my acne go away ? I also wash my face every night with a glycerin based soap and then exfoliate it. Is that enough ?
HI there,
I have tried A LOT of products and I have to say that at least for those with sensitive skin, products touted for acne will generally only worsen your skin condition by drying it out. The best skin care for acne prone skin is something that will really hydrate it and soothe irritations.
I use several products from Juvena (Skin Nova SC Serum and gel mask from the specialists line, day and night cream for sensitive skin under the prevent and optimize line) and I truly believe this company is the best there is – not only for acne but antiaging. It will not make you break out. It will only heal your skin in terms of irritation, hydration and skin tone (it was originally formulated for burn victims). In addition, don’t forget to exfoliate twice a week to remove dead skin cells. I do use a spot treatment with benzoyl peroxide that has hydroquinone to lighter scars (quinoderm – can buy online too. Try ebay). Lastly, for scars – and you are lucky if thats all you have, see a good esthetician and get microdermabrasion. It has definately helped me.
Skin care alone wont heal most people’s acne but if you are one of the lucky ones that can do well with Proactive, I am jealous! For those who just want a good skin care routine that will only help your skin.. I promise you these products work. See below for link. They are expensive, I must warn but so worth it. They are also hard to find – at least in Canada. I buy them online. A good site is Strawberry net and they sell to most countries.

I forgot to mention that if you use soaps on your skin that are alkaline, you will probably break out. Your skin is supposed to have a slightly alkaline base (acid mantle) and if this is disrupted, it will likely lead to acne. I used a product touted for acne called Carley’s and it made me break out because it was alkaline based.
For makeup – I can recommend a tinted moisturizer that is fairly natural – it actually covers very well. Its from jean gatineau and its the 3D lift tinted emulsion. I put a mineral makeup on top from hourglass but thats my preference for a bit more of a matte look.
That’s it!
Hey Fran
What for soaps are good for your face and acne and is
water good for you acne to you face and i hope it you can cleaning tips to give me..
is chocolate eat good and helps this for your acne ????
thanks and greetz
Hey Fran! I also get that kind of acne too…my acne though I’ve noticed has been clearing up a little with my new gentler skincare routine. I use Awaken My Senses organic face care pack for oily skin (right now I am just on the samples) and I use natural yogurt as an over-night spot treatment for my problem areas. I don’t like to exfoliate because it doesn’t seem to be any help. So I get that cosmetic acne and I am looking for a face mask to use once or twice a week. Which type of clay do you think I should use, Fran? I have sensitive, oily skin that is acne-prone. Thank you!
Marc – You shouldn’t use soaps on your face. Try a gentler, organic or all-natural face cleanser. And as for the chocolate, Fran has mentioned that Cocao (not cocoa) is great for healing acne and other skin problems, though I haven’t tried myself. I hope too sometime though! I think she said that it is good for your skin because it is not processed.
