I’m Loving This Healthy Sugar Alternative That I Can Grow In My Garden…

Aztec Sweet HerbI got given this amazing plant for Christmas. It’s called the Aztec Sweet Herb, or Lippia dulcis to be more “botanical”.

This plant is amazing because its edible leaves are incredibly sweet. This means you can grow this plant in a pot or in the garden and pick off the leaves to sweeten food and teas. It’s very common to use the leaves of the Aztec Sweet Herb to sweeten fruit salad and herbal teas. But I think I’ll be using it for more than that, especially when I’m 100% raw vegan in the New Year!

I’ve got heaps more to say about this plant in my video-

Medicinal Properties

Used in the treatment of coughs, colds, bronchitis, asthma, and colic. It has also been used traditionally by Mexicans as a expectorant and as a stimulant.

Please also note that the Aztec Sweet Herb is not recommended to be used as an everyday sweetener because of its high camphor content. But I’m all for everything in moderation so I feel that it’s a good idea to “mix it up” anyway.

I so enjoyed hearing about the Aztec Sweet Herb. I’m asthmatic and addicted to sweets. I will not, as you suggest, use this herb to replace the amount of sweet I eat…as I’m going to give up anything with white sugar this New Year. I was especially excited to hear the herb has medicinal properties and I would be interested to know more history about the herb. Thanks for sharing. I will look for it in my area, Colorado.

Wonderful find. I would just like to ask, which sweetener do you perfere? I personally would not really try this because of the high camphor content. I tend to stay away from moderation foods. I have read about that and I heared that it has a strong scent. I like to stay away from strong scents because they give me headaches.

On the other hand, it is really good that there are many sweetener alternatives that are organic. I just use organic clover honey. I really think that I might try it because I get colds often and I have asthma since I was 4 years old. I would love to try this because I am tired of using my inhaler ever so often. I dont have no idea of what ingredients are in them and I dont want to be overusing them as is might be “unhealthy” for me.

May you please share some rganic methods that would help people with asthma. Also, I was thinking about getting a naturopath and it seems like a good idea but does your health insurance cover it or do you have to pay out of pocket?

Anyway, HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND A HEALTHY VEGAN NEW YEAR!!!!.

I have never heard of this herb, but I am going to go to the health food store and see if I can get some. Since, it is no t recommended to use everyday, I will look to add it to some good food creations.

I am going Raw Vegan this year too. Congrats! I will definitely be following your journey. :)

Olivia- It definitely doesn’t have a strong scent. Maybe when it’s cooked? I also feel that ALL foods are better off as moderation foods.

I don’t have a fav sweetener at the moment because there are so many around. I’ve been sweetening a lot with dates but they have a really high glycemic index so maybe I’d say honey? I also want to experiment a bit with yacun syrup but it’s super expensive.

In the past I’ve used xylitol because of its 0 GI but it seems a bit too processed and has a bit of a chemical taste.

Gerlaine- Good luck to you on the raw veganism girl!

Hello,
awesome post, I’ve never heard of this before! I’ll be sure to check it out. But I had a question concerning your choice to become a total raw vegan…well, why?
I was a raw vegan for a while, I was falling a part, it was quite horrific. I know that sounds ridiculous …and propaganda-ish, but I seriously don’t think its the best choice, its quite radical…recently I’ve been eating according to Nourishing Traditions standards, and I feel so fantastic its unbelievable…But I’m very moderate with everything…I understand different “diets” work for different people, but to me, raw veganism..just like someone who ONLY ate meat, would be too far in the extreme for me. Anyway, just wondering about your choice. I’ve personally been a vegetarian for 5 years, I was a raw food vegan for 2 of those, and those two years were the worst of my life. Please don’t judge me on what I say, it is only the truth, I definitely do not judge you for your choice, I was just wondering how you came to these conclusions.

Hi Fran,

Where did your friend get the plant? Is it fairly common to purchase from a plant store or whatnot?

Thanks,

Hello!
My name is Timothy Sawers.

I’m looking forward to being more vegan and healthy.
Now that you feed me information and recourses, could you feed me locations too? Pretty please.

I live in canada,
I’m not sure of our supermarket differences but could you tell me where to find the honey, sugar plant, and essential oils (i.e. Lavender)

I am looking very much forward to a healthier future! Not to mention my frustrating hormonal development related skin and health problems.

I truly look forward to your movement, actions, and website! Congratulations, good luck, and thank you!

Very much appreciated!
