Is Acne Hereditary And Can Facial Steaming Cure Acne?

Yes, I am human just like the rest of you and occasionally I do get a breakout. I just spent a few days at the Sunshine Coast in Queensland with the very humid weather and my skin threw a tantrum and gave me a few spots.

Towards the end of this video I talk about my skin and why my spots have come up, but I did choose very good lighting so you can’t see them and I feel a little lame now watching the video back talking about my skin being bad when it looks pretty good! Check it out -

Along with very hot showers and facial steaming, humidity can easily bring on a breakout. Since I’ve been back in the Brisbane and the dryer weather, my skin has started clearing up very quickly.

I remember the same thing happened to me when I returned back to Australia from overseas. I spent a lot of time in very cold, dry weather as I traveled through Europe. And then when I came home to a very hot, humid Australian summer, my skin freaked out and I had a bad breakout. Within a couple of weeks my skin had gotten used to it and cleared up again. I guess sometimes those of us with acne prone skin need to endure those few days were the natural oils in our skin are getting used to a sudden change in climate.

Great vid Fran. This is the greatest you have ever looked! I want my skin to look like yours soo badly!
I’ve been doing a tea tree oil steam for about 10-15 mins about 3 times a week for the past 2 weeks and my skin seems to have gotten better and less red. I think I have candida. So I should stop? Maybe it’s just making it look better now but im in store for a big break out later? I usually remove me makeup with Nivea gentle skin toner, then right away steam, then use Cetaphil cleanser. I’ll definitely stop with my long hot showers though.

Hi Fran,

Despite you saying that you have troubled skin right now I dont think I’ve ever seen your skin look better. It could be the lighting but you’ve got to tell us if it’s a new product or anything you’ve been trying lately. ;)

I don’t think acne is hereditary either. I have 4 older siblings, 3 of them female and I am the only one to ever be acne and rosacea prone, and I am the only one to suffer from hormonal problems. But the rest of my family suffer from their own fair share of health problems far greater than mine.

I say to my nephews & nieces that are also acne prone that we are the lucky ones because it is our bodies way of telling us that something internal is not right, that this ‘visual queue’ is a warning sign that we need to treat our body with greater care – some people don’t get warning signs, instead they just wake up one day and something dreadful happens with their liver, gallbladder, pancreas or kidneys, or worse they wake up with cancer or lymphoma or something…

Okay….I love a burning hot shower. Love love it. However, whenever I get out my pimples are all red and most likely inflamed b/c of the heat. This morning I took a luke warm shower and my spots were not all super red when I got out. My face looked much better than it usually does after a shower. Not only that…I felt more energized because the hot showers always leaves me feeling tired and drained. Perhaps I will use the 90/10 rule on the hot shower thing too! Thanks for the advice taking a luke warm shower does make a difference.

I remember I went on holiday to Colorado, and it was extremely dry. And the altitude we really high… something like 2000 ft above sea level. Anyway when I was there I experienced the worse break out of my life… So I do believe that location can play a role in acne.

Hey Lando- Steaming can inflame the top layer of skin and trap toxins in and make your skin worse. But if your skin is doing better then stick with it! You might be doing a really good job and actually helping to get stuff out.

Kevin- I was a the beach and had a swim in the ocean, I think the salt water helps a lot!

Kitty- I LOVE your attitude and I totally agree

hey fran!
thanks so much for this video! i’m such an idiot! i always wash my face with hot water, well not hot hot but, i mean, hotter than lukewarm. lol, and well i’m obviously gunna stop now! hopefully i’ll see a difference in my skin. its already 70% clear using the holistic approach as well as antibiotics, but hopefully switching to lukewarm water will speed up the proccess. what do you think? could using hot/warm temperature water REALLY have been dragging down the effectiveness of my skin care routine? ohh and its been really humid here in SoCal…maybe thats what messed up my face in the first place=/
thanks fran!=)

You talk about candida overgrowth alot. What do you think of a candida cleanse, the kind they sell in pill form at the store? Along with eating the right food, do you think it would help?

#10 Fran on 04.07.09 at 8:39 pm

Jasmine- If it’s a systemic Candida overgrowth then a pill will unlikely fix it, it’s BEST to either visit a professional like a naturopath or get your hands on the Body Ecology Diet, simply because it contains so much useful information about Candida.

thanks for that video it was helpful. I have a question I used a product with salicylic acid and it got rid of my whiteheads but after I stopped using it they reappear and now that I start using it again theyre disappearing but am I gonna depend from salicylic acid all my life?

#12 Anoukee on 04.08.09 at 2:21 pm

I also don’t think acne is hereditary…neither of my parents had acne problems.
Just a quick question: do you think active charcoal helps with candida??

#13 Fran on 04.08.09 at 2:32 pm

Hi Anoukee, I’ve never heard of active charcoal and candida so I can’t comment on that one!

Unrelated question… but knowing that you live in such a hot place, do you use sunscreen? And if so, which one? I’m going to Mexico next month and I want to use a sunscreen that won’t do any more damage to my acne!

Very well said Fran! I have 2 sisters and 2 brothers and only one of my brothers has had acne. Nor my mom or dad has had acne ever!! Btw my dad eats alot of junkfod but isn’t overweight or has skin problems ever! So I asked him there has to be something he does to stay a heatlthy weight and no skin problems. He told me all he does is drink a shot glass of wine after he eats and has a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil every morning and night. My mom never did anything all she did was light cleanser and moistuizer and my dad I don’t know how my dad has perfect skin he uses and alcoholic based aftershave and says he likes the burn afterword. My sisters, no skin problems ever!! Just me and my brother were the only ones but his is gone and has beautiful skin. I still have hope! Fran you and me have the same sensitve skin mine cant handle anything!! but mine loves the humidity my skin clears completly in the humidity but here in the dry dry Arizona desert my skin hates it! Could the wine and evoo have anything to do with good weight or good skin? BTW chase check out this sunscreen named Blue Lizard Spf 30+ but make sure to get the sensitive one its the only sunscreen my skin can handle. The only place I find it though is CVS. Its chemical free and doesn’t smell like anything at all! I need to wear sunscreen everyday here in Arizona the sun is way way way bad.

Hey Fran,
Thanks for answering my question about hereditery causing acne. I’m so relieved to know that it’s not hereditery and that my acne is hopefully curable. My question to you is, how long was it after you started your holistic approach (yoga, meditation, etc.) that you started noticing your skin improving? And how long did it take to clear all the acne up?
Thanks for doing these videos! You’re awesome! :)

#17 Fran on 04.15.09 at 6:29 pm

Hrithikzgirl83- that’s a difficult question to answer because I did a lot of things wrong first before I found a good way to clear my skin, so it took me just over a year. If I’d done everything right, I’d say 3 months is a good time period. But again it also depends on the severity of your skin.

Chase- I don’t use a lot of sunblock because I’m worried about the chemicals, so I just don’t stay in the sun for very long. However, I have found an awesome sunblock from live-live which I now sell in my store – http://www.highonhealth.org/products-page/cleansers-and-moisturizers/live-live-natural-sunscreen-with-msm–orange-spf-30/

I’m taking my first cold shower tonight… I hope this works. I’m a glutton for long steaming hot showers. possibly the cause of my problems. Just had a lovely milk thistle and peppermint tea too, I’m hopefully on the right track.
