How To Apply Makeup To Cover Acne

This video series is all about how to apply mineral makeup. For more information on mineral makeup and why it’s better for covering acne, click here: Is mineral makeup better for covering acne and rosacea?

There are heaps of mineral makeup brands available, have a look and see what’s in your local area (health stores usually stock them). Everyday Minerals in particular is popular for acne sufferers.

step1.gif
You will need two brushes to apply the mineral makeup.

  1. The First brush is to apply the makeup as a concealer. You can choose which brush your prefer, and you can buy these quite cheaply at cosmetic warehouses or even grocery stores.
  2. The second brush is the main brush you’ll need to apply the makeup. I recommend that you invest in a good quality brush because the makeup will go on better and the brush will last ages. You can usually buy one from the same place that you purchase your mineral makeup.

step2.gif

It’s very important to moisturize before you apply the mineral makeup. This is because the makeup comes in a powder form so it needs something to cling on to. Make sure your moisturizer dries first though (give it 5-10 minutes). If your skin is too ‘wet’ or oily, the makeup will appear blotchy. You’ll also find that if your skin is too dry, the makeup looks too powdery on your face.

I’ve found that when I’m cleansing my face with the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM), I don’t need to moisturize before I apply the mineral makeup. The makeup goes on really well and looks great, so I can skip this step.

step3.gif

You can use the mineral makeup as a concealer first to cover your acne and acne scars. You can even use it to cover any other spots or skin pigmentation that you may have including the dark circles under your eyes.

With mineral makeup, it’s best to apply a small amount because you’ll find that’s all you need. If you want a heavier coverage, it’s better to apply thin layers rather than a large amount in one go.

Hi Fran and viewers, just thought I’d put my two bobs in about mineral makeup – which i love! I’ve just come across an Australian brand called Inika, and am desperate to tell as many people as I can about them. Previously I was using an American brand called Jane Iredale, which was nice but quite expensive.

Inika is alot more affordable and also vegan, which is a nice comfort along with the fact that they’re 100% natural minerals. Highly recommend them, i haven’t seen a difference in my skin in terms of the acne (though you can usually see a difference if you’re switching to minerals from a normal commercial make-up), however it covers alot better and looks more natural than anythign i’ve used before.

Highly recommended!

That sounds great, thanks! Do they have a website? And can you go to a store to buy it?

Hey everyone! well I took the advice on using mineral makeup but when I told my Naturopathic Doctor that I started using mineral makeup she told me to stop immediatly. Yes, it covers everything realy well and looks quite natural, however she did tell me that most of these products do contain a mineral called “bismuth oxychloride” this is in alot of mineral makeup and when they say the makeup is good for all skin types this is not as true as they say. This mineral can actually irritate and aggrevate your condition. Also, the mineral makeup just sits on your skin therefore not alowing your skin to breath. (and just like anything that is living your skin needs to be able to breath!). but… if you do choose to use mineral makeup try to find one that does not contain “bismuth oxychloride”. well I hope this helps! take care :) . Hi Nina,

This is kind of true. There are some brands of mineral makeup that contains chemicals, so it’s a lot better to go for a natural brand.

I actually buy my mineral makeup from a natuopath! It’s a natural brand made in OZ – Minerelle. My naturopath uses it herself, and used to have bad skin which is cleared up 100% while using the makeup. She also sells natural skin care products, and has specializes in natural skin care and beauty therapy.

hi fran ! when i also use mineral makeup to cover up my pimple or blemishes it isnt enough..they still show.can u help mr out!!!!

Vivian – Mineral makeup is great but unfortunately it will not preform miracles. Just keep up with your acne treatments and use the mineral makeup if you need it when you go out. Your skin will look a lot better, even if it doesn’t look perfect that is okay. It will always look worse to you, others probably don’t even notice.

TONJEKAROLINA – Trust me on this one, it is very very rare to have pure skin. You need fantastic genes in your family to actually have that. Most people have large pores, comedonal acne, freckles, moles, spots ..you name it they have something.

The less we think and worry about our skin, and the less makeup we wear, the better our skin will be. So girls, try to wear as little makeup as possible and be bold and brave and confident and realize that you’re very beautiful girls even without makeup.

Acne is temporary, especially at a young age, and it will go away. It’s also NORMAL for teenagers to have acne so if you go out into the world with spotty skin, nobody will even look at it or see it on you because it’s just expected that teenagers will have spots.

The best advice I can give you, is to keep up your acne treatments, but also try NOT to think about your skin. Don’t pick at it or stare at it in the mirror. Every time you feel sad about it, think about something else. Divert your mind elsewhere. Think of something beautiful and happy :)

This method actually works wonders.

I use L’Oreal True Match Minerals, do you know if this is as good for my skin or should I buy the one you have?

hi. i’m in my mid 20’s and i’ve had acne since i was in high school. now that my acne has gotten better, i’ve noticed that i have lots of acne scars on my face. i don’t know what to use to lessen my facial acne scars anymore. i need help. my facial scar makes me feel unhappy.

#11 Fran on 06.03.08 at 6:10 am

Annabelle- Look up the products on http://www.makeupalley.com for reviews :) but most mineral makeups should be okay. I prefer the most natural alternatives, but go for whatever is accessible to you.

Harmony- This is the most asked question I get! Have a search in the forums because there are a few discussion in there. Here is one example:

ime a male highschool student and i do use makeup all the time to cover my acne but its starting to show !! and its really embarrasing when people notice it is there any products i can use to cover it up in a better more efficient way ?

#16 Fran on 07.07.08 at 3:49 am

Frank, the one thing about being a guy is you can get away with more acne than girls can. Trust me, it’s more acceptable for guys to have spots then it is for girls.

If you can handle it, I’d say ditch the makeup. When I stopped wearing makeup every day my skin actually got better a lot quicker. And start focusing on your treatments. With the right treatments within 3 months you could have clear skin again.

However, if you really do want to continue wearing a cover up, go for a mineral makeup (what’s listed on this page), because it’s light, won’t clog your pores and is difficult to see that you’re actually wearing it. You can now get mineral makeups just about everywhere – including heaps of places online and in drug stores.

I have seen little snippets of information on the web about makeup that’s designed specifically for men. You’ve inspired me to do a bit of research so you may find a makeup for men’s blog post coming up soon :)

what about make-up that is called skin clearing oil-free make-up by neutrogena? which uses salicylic acid?

#18 Fran on 07.16.08 at 7:43 am

Hi Mandy, look it up on http://www.makeupalley.com and see what others have said about it :)

Hey fran..
I checked out your website when i was on youtube and saw your video about that acne free in 3 days..

your skin looks really nice.. it looks flawless..

I have suffered from acne for a very long time.. and its just that until recently.. i was like “Why didnt i do something about it when i first noticed it?”

well i promised myself to try my best as of yesterday 01aug as a new starting point.. to eat well, exercise, use a normal cleansing product, and to take really good care of my skin..

I have tried everything for 6 years now.. everything… Pro-active, Sisheido, SKII whatever brand you name it.. i’ve used it.. nothing seemed to got better..

but now.. im gonna really try use natural stuff..

i saw your website.. and i just wanted to say it was really good.. and knowing that you are actually wanting to help others.. its a great relief..

its a great relief to see articles, videos about acne and tips, suggestions of maintaining healthy skin.. and not see a sentence like.. “today, if you want to read this article or book all you need to do is pay $49.95″

I was reading before about Franks situation, FRANK! dont be afraid to use make up.. I use make up.. and i totally understand why you want to.. because you just want to cover it all up like everyone else..

the redness (blemish) and scarring may be really bad..

and as for fran’s comment, i totally understand how its soo important for females.. but.. it is just as important for males..

I use to be a a model, until i had really bad acne my contract was terminated.. and my skin has never got better..

without putting on make up.. i look hideous.. like.. i know it harms ur skin.. because it may clog and all.. but my skin is all red.. and its really disgusting..

i work in the airline industry and we are constantly dealing with people.. soo i must wear make up to cover all bits (although it doesnt cover everything) but at least it covers some parts..

and the main reason why i really want to clear my skin is because i want to become a flight attendant..

but just wanted to say Fran.. I really adore you! I’m sure your website is helping and motivating a lot of people as it has motivated me by reading it today..

well done and keep it up!

** just for others info.. one of my friend suffering from acne she completely used no make up.. and eat really healthy… and use normal cleansing products.. now she just use water.. her skin is still having no improvements… soo acne is different for everyone!

** DONT GIVE UP****

Hello Fran,

I’d like to thank you for recommneding Minerelle makeup. I just ordered the powder and brush. I just recently broke out really bad in the past two months and have found your websie extemely helpful. Naturally, I’m experiencing extreme discomfort with my acne as it is moderate/severe and of course, very unpleasant. I was trying to avoid the use of makeup seeing how I never felt the need to use it before. : ( It will be my very first time and I was wondering if you think this brand of makeup will help to cover up red, active, inflammatory acne?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I ordered a free sample of Faerie Organic mineral make up today and I think it’s great! All my acne scars aren’t covered because the concealer didn’t come with the samples but you can hardly tell they’re there! My skin tone looks even and nothing has looked oily at all. I would highly recommend trying the samples.

[...] If you haven’t seen them already, I’ve recorded a series of videos on how to apply mineral makeup which are worth watching if you’ve never used mineral makeup before. At the bottom of that page I’ve also listed most of the makeup and acne articles I’ve written which are worth a dig around- How To Apply Makeup To Cover Acne [...]

#26 Becky on 06.18.09 at 1:20 am

Hi, I also have been using Faerie Organic and have great results covering my acne. My breakouts have gotten less and less too! I like that it isn’t dry and flaky but leaves a healthy perfect glow without looking greasy like bare escentuals did to me. Unfortunatley, Everyday minerals never worked out for me as they had way to many choices and I never did find my perfect color in the right finish. :(

#27 Joolzy on 07.19.09 at 10:52 pm

Does anyone have luck covering up big, pus-filled whiteheads with their mineral makeup? Mine only seems to highlight the heads even more.

x

#28 Claudia on 06.13.10 at 2:00 pm

I use jane iredale disappear concealer – its a great mineral makeup concealer that works really well and it has green tea extract that also helps fight breakouts whilst on your skin. It has been used to cover tattoos so it is really effective.
I also use i.d. bare minerals as a powder over the top (with a good brush ofcourse) and I find that works well to smooth out the skin tone and even out scars/acne.

They are both american brands and I bought i.d. bare minerals in the states but Jane Iredale is available in a lot of salons in Australia and they have a huge range of makeup. I would recommend checking it out!

Hey Fran do you still find the OCM works well for you? I tried it for a while using ev coconut oil and I don’t know if I just didn’t give it enough time to work or whatnot, but it seemed to clog my pores… And I’ve started using honey as a cleanser but it doesn’t get all the mineral makeup off; is there something I can add to it to remove those stubborn last wisps and still maintain the ph of my skin? I use aloe vera after and then a vitamin c/e moisturizer. My skin isn’t breaking out but I’m having a hard time covering the red scars without foundation (which breaks me out.).
