My Favorite Breakfast: Chocolate Quinoa Porridge

I have no idea if you’re going to like this recipe but I have it every single morning for breakfast and I love it.

You may remember me talking about Quinoa a lot. It’s one of the better grains to consume because it’s easier for our bodies to digest, it contains more calcium than milk, it’s a complete protein AND it’s packed full of vitamins and minerals.

And I’m sure you remember me talking even more about the superfood cacao which is just too amazing for me to write about in such a small space. So here’s a video I recorded a few months ago on how amazing cacao beans are-

So one morning when I was looking at my bag of Quinoa flakes and fighting a chocolate craving, I figured I may as well go with the flow and combine these two awesome foods together to make something spectacular. And now I’m addicted to it!

Please keep in mind that this is a skin safe recipe so it will not break you out :)

Chocolate Quinoa Porridge

Loving preparation

funny, i tried this yesterday. to me, it just tasted like rice would if you tried to make it sweet which to me isn’t a good combo. then again this was my first time eating quinoa!

Mmmm, this looks good!

Do you know how stevia drops and stevia leaf powder compare? I don’t have liquid stevia because I heard the stevia leaf powder (which is green) was less refined, but maybe I should get some stevia liquid.

This is even simpler then Lazy Fran’s Fish and Vege soup! Definitely worth trying soon.

This sounds so yummy! :)

I do love quinoa, but I haven’t tried the rolled flakes yet, which is weird because I love that sort of thing.

I’ve actually just discovered organic rolled Spelt flakes – they look like oats, but are much tastier, even my rabbit likes them, and that is saying something as he is very fussy… lol

Oh Fran I forgot to mention: now this is really weird, cos I’ve never met you and I don’t even qualify as a stalker lol :) but last night I dreamt that we met and were having a fun cooking/food prep weekend making all sorts of healthy delights… :D

Excellent post Fran. I remember awhile back you made a video about chocolate blueberries or blueberry flax super food. I would love to hear more about that as well.

oh yum!!! fran, you have the best taste, thx so much!

Would you suggest soaking the quinoa flakes overnight? I’ve only used the whole grain before. Cannot WAIT to try this!

#8 Fran on 05.02.09 at 5:13 pm

Kyle- I use both, but the liquid is better because it’s more concentrated and often recipes advise to mix the powder with water to make it into a liquid! Also it’s just so easy squeezing out drops.

Kitty- Sounds lovely, hey maybe we met in the astral plane and hung out ;)

Organic- you may be talking about the sprouted flax with blueberries that I picked up in Toronto. I haven’t seen that brand in Australia but I loved it over there. Still I prefer Chia over flax now.

Melissa- Yes, it’s always best to soak your grains.

lol :D that’s exactly what I was thinking too Fran when I woke up from a very real feeling dream…

I often wonder where we go when we sleep… I’m very curious about astral planes… ;)

Hi Fran…that sounds yummy…do you think you could use the real quinoa grains instead of the flakes and Xylitol instead of Stevia? Have you tried this version as well?

Anyway Fran, it may have been a ‘future’ dream – I tend to have a lot of psychic dreams… about 60% of my dreams come true… now I just need to have that lotto winning dream… lol :D

A dream/aspiration of mine actually is to have a healthy cooking TV show! I’d love to be able to show people how quick and easy, and DELICIOUS healthy food cooking/preparation really is…

Something that drives me bonkers is those women who wrote The 4 Ingredients cookbook – first I’m happy they have had so much success, but really how healthy can food be that is made with only 4 ingredients (on a regular basis), most of which come from a tin or packet!? arrgghh! the insanity!

I’d like to educate people about all of the nasty chemicals and preservatives in packaged foods and how fresh healthy food is actually fun, delicious and easy to prepare… I can dream can’t I…? lol

#12 Fran on 05.03.09 at 1:44 pm

Rosy- Yes and yes, I’ve done both. I prefer the consistency of the flakes but the whole grains are much better for your body. I originally used xylitol but switched to stevia because too much xylitol seems to give me a bit of a belly ache.

Kitty- Wonderful aspiration you have there, maybe you should start a blog!

Hi Fran! This is kind of irrelevant to your article. But I am in need of an exfoliant, as the weather is getting colder and dryer here in Melbourne. My skin has become flaky, and I was wondering which exfoliant you would recommend from your shop. I am looking for an exfoliant that has actual beads in it to scrub away dead skin. Would that be the “honey I shrunk the pores” or the papaya exfoliant? Thanks!

#14 Fran on 05.03.09 at 10:04 pm

Hi Renee, definitely the papaya exfoliant :)

It’s funny, I came across chocolate quinoa in much the same way!

Another yummy option is to use nut/seed milk instead of water. It’s a great way to get extra nutrition, and it tastes better/creamier. I use hemp seed milk because it has omega 3 & 6 fatty acids along with other great stuff, and the quinoa & chocolate cover up the odd hemp flavor (i’m getting used to putting it in cold cereal). I’ve tried quinoa with almond and soy milk too.

Just a quick question: I eat porridge everyday but I use normal oats… Do you know if oats are good for your skin? I heard they are anti-inflammatory… I just have them with water and honey (half manuka honey/half normal). Does quinoa taste similar?

#17 Steve on 05.19.09 at 3:36 am

Can there be way that reagular oatmeal can be helping me break out?

#18 Fran on 05.22.09 at 8:12 am

K- I used to eat oats every morning. I just switched to Quinoa because it’s easier for the body to digest. The taste is quite different.

Steve- Only if you have an allergy or intolerance to oatmeal. But make sure you soak your oats first!
