Proactiv Is Not An Acne Solution

proactiv-bad.jpgI know I’ve complained about Proactiv before, but this time I’ve done a video blog post so you can see how passionately I dislike the product.

Proactiv uses the active ingredient Benzoyl Peroxide (BP) which you probably know by now that I absolutely hate. Proactiv in particular uses a heap of BP which will dry out and irritate most skin types. Oh, and it will also bleach your towels and even your eyebrows.

If you’re considering purchasing Proactiv Solution, watch this video first. I strongly recommend that you don’t purchase the product. There are definitely better ways to cure acne.

You can read my previous blog posts about Benzoyl Peroxide and Proactiv for more information.

Thanks for watching!

Hi Fran, just wanted to say thanks for your articles and video, it’s great to see someone who’s really passionate about natural skin care doing all they can to steer others away from the dangers lurking around in the form of celebrity endorsments!
I hope whatever you’re currently doing for your skin is working and that you will be able to move away from the peroxide for good shortly, because ideally (As I can tell you would already know) you don’t want to go anywhere near the stuff, it can do shocking things to your skin. And don’t forget, the skin is the bodies largest organ and it’s proven that a huge majority of what we put on it gets absorbed directly into the bloodstream.
Though i know clearly you’re not one that needs to be advised of this, but hopefully some other people out there who haven’ previously thought of their skin in this way, will now do so. Sometimes it’s hard to resist the temptation of a quick fix, but try and look ahead and treat your body and your soul with love and kindness by going the natural path - you’ll be far better off in the long run.
All the best!

Hi Bel, thanks for your comment. Yeah, I figured out a few months ago that Benzoyl Peroxide and Proactiv should never be used so I haven’t used it in a long time. Actually it made my acne worse. At the time I was so fed up with chronic acne so I gave in to what I thought was a ‘quick fix’ like you said, but it definitely wasn’t.

I now use 100% natural products only.

OMG finally someone who understands the dangers of benzoyl peroxide! my whole frikken school uses it, &their skin is literally like falling off their face. i just wanna go up to them and say STOP USING THAT STUPID INGREDIENT because thats why your acne isnt going away! i used to have bad acne as well and i went online and i too discovered the harmful ways of proactive and it’s main ingredient and like you, now use mostly natural products. i totally agree that natual is the best way to go. and basically i agree with everything you said so, i’m so glad that someone finally is so passionate about the harmful effects of that terrible product and bp! keep it up fran :]

Thanks for the reply Sarah, I love getting comments like this. It confirms that what I’m writing about is so true for a lot of people out there.

hey Fran. I was going to go buy some pro activ because i have pretty bad acne now, but once i saw this it kinda turned me off, what would you suggest for people like me that are in their teens and have oily, red skin because of zits and stuff?i’m really desperate for something to help with my acne because it’s making my confidence go wayyy down =(

Proactiv didn’t help me at all, but it can help some people. It seems to work best on teenage, oily skin.

You could try it. Just make sure that you stop using it as soon as your skin gets dry and/or irritated. The mistake I made was to continue using it even after my skin got irritated.

Hey Fran,
I really hate Proactive too. I have talked to many people that have used it and they all regret it. My friend used it and it bleached her towels, eyebrows and hairline. It stung her eyes and made them very sensitive. It completely dried her skin out, making it very scaly. She has now been using natural skincare from New Zealand for about 3 years, her beauty therapist recently told her that she has no signs of Proactive on her skin left. It has taken her a long time to repair her skin from the damage of Proactive.

An Aromatherapist told me that Proactive is known to cause liver damage, which I don’t dought.

So, can anyone recommend a good all natural product for mild acne and oily skin?

#9 Fran on 04.03.08 at 7:22 am

Hi Kelly, unfortunately there’s no natural product that will work miracles at getting rid of acne (although I don’t think any chemical products do either). It’s better to follow a more holistic approach as in this article:

http://www.highonhealth.org/the-ultimate-guide-to-clear-skin-in-7-easy-steps/

As for what to use on your face for mild acne and oily skin, I’d recommend Miessence products (the oily skin range is great), or the cetaphil range for oily skin.

For spot treating, I love the Miessence purifying gel, or diluted tea tree oil works great too :)

I didn’t like proactive either, it really irritated my skin. I even tried the sensitive skin one but it was just to harsh.

Hey Fran! I’m Francis! Hehe! I’m loving the videos and blogs! And after this, I’m happy to say I’m canceling my ProActiv membership and will be sending them a very nice E-mail regarding it ruining my skin!

But since I’ve stopped using ProActiv, I’ll need another product to keep my acne under-control!

What are your thoughts on Biotherm products? I’ve always wanted to try them and they seem to be quite cool! Thanks :D
