I was browsing through an acne forum today and I came across the question ‘"will cigarettes and smoking make my acne worse?". Now this is something that I’ve never considered before because I have never smoked. The answer to this question however didn’t surprise me at all.
How smoking can effect your skin
- Men and women who smoke are 65% more likely to have acne than non-smokers, specifically non-inflamed blackheads and blocked pores.
- Smoking restricts blood vessels which can reduce circulation. This reduces the amount of oxygen and minerals being transported to the skin.
- Smoking can also cause wrinkles, because an enzyme forms, which breaks down collagen in the skin.
- Tobacco smoke in the air also has a drying effect on the skin.
- Smoking reduces the amount of Vitamin A in the body, which is really bad because Vitamin A is very important in the prevention of acne.
- Smoking can also slow down the healing processes in the body.
- For people who suffered acne as teenagers, the probability of also suffering acne in adulthood is four times higher in smokers than non-smokers.
Hey, I see this as just another good excuse to quite smoking if you have the habit.
