I’ve blogged a bit in the past about how important it is to drink good quality spring water, and how plastic water bottles are a bad idea ..but I’ve never offered a good alternative. That is until now!

And I don’t know why I didn’t think of this before.
SIGG water bottles kind of made their presence known to me by just being everywhere. My friends were using them, my family was using them, everybody ..just started carrying around these cool little metallic-looking water bottles. So of course I had to have one. And now I don’t know how I lived without it.
SIGG bottles are awesome because they keep your water fresh and cool, they don’t leak any nasty toxins into your water, they’re not going to break if you drop them and most importantly for me - they come in a range of colors and pretty designs.
Keeping your water cool and away from direct sunlight is more important than you think, which is why it’s good these bottles are not clear like glass. The suns rays can interrupt the hexagonal structure of water which is why it’s better to keep your water in dark containers. However, it really depends on the quality of the water you’re drinking. Sure a dark bottle is better if your water is top quality, but if your water is not that great to begin with, then a glass bottle that has had sun exposure is not going to make that much of a difference.
SIGG bottles retail at around US$20 for a 600ml size in a plain color (the pretty designs are a little more expensive), which is quite cheap considering they last a long time so you’ll definitely get your money’s worth. A friend of mine just told me the other day that she’s had hers for about ten years now which just shows you how long they can last and how durable they are.
And if you really don’t have the money to make the investment, you can do what a good mate of mine does. He buys juice and iced tea in glass bottles and recycles them as water bottles. The advantage is you can have a few different bottles so there’s plenty spares if you lose one. And they come in all different sizes so you can choose the shape you like. The disadvantage is if you drop it, it’s going to break so they can be a little dangerous, and of course glass can be quite heavy.
I’m a bit of a clumsy girl and I like to take a bottle with me while I’m working out rollerblading so I don’t want to have to worry about falling over on top of my glass water bottle if I fall while I’m skating. So for me, investing in a SIGG bottle was definitely worth it.
And note that I’m not actually selling these bottles even though it may sound like a sales pitch
This is just one of those things that I love and think is great and think everybody could benefit from using. Kind of for the greater good of health, helping the world etc.
Where to buy SIGG bottles
The only place in my city that stocks SIGG bottles is Biome - http://www.biome.com.au. Surprisingly I tried three of the chain camping stores in Brisbane first but they didn’t stock them. So you may find that an eco friendly store like Biome is the place to go.
There’s a worldwide store locator on their website which should help - http://www.sigg.com/en/where-to-buy/
Of course you can also buy online. Look for an online store that stocks them in the country you live in to save on postage costs.

Personally, I use my starbucks mug, which is stainless steal inside & out, as my “water bottle”. What’s nice about it, is that I use it for my [organic] green tea in the morning, and then I fill it with water for the rest of the day! [I try to fill it with filtered water when I can, but when I'm at school, I have to settle for tap water unfortunately].
One thing I’ve always wondered about these SIGG bottles is how to properly wash them? Like what if you add some greens to your water, or drink juice or something? How do you wash the inside of the container when the lid is so small? I’m not going to lie, that is originally the reason why I chose to buy a mug rather than these types of bottle. [Like you, I avoid plastic AS MUCH AS I CAN! I even pack my lunches in glass containers]
Yeah I wondered about that too ..you can actually but little cleaning tablets that you drop in with water and they clean the bottle out.
I personally only drink water in any type of bottle form. Especially if it’s a water bottle, I avoid putting naything lese. Even though the only other thing I drink is like rice milk, oat milk, tea and no one put these kind of stuff in water bottles anyway.
I have a Sigg bottle and my mom has one from Kleen Kanteen. We both carry them EVERYWHERE.
I’d like to try one of these out. At home I drink out of a glass bottle but for being out and about I take my plastic sports bottle. I tried a metal bottle a few years ago and hated it as there was no ’suction/flow’ and it was impossible to get a tiny sip of water out of so it was especially annoying for taking to the gym. So it just sits in the back of the cupboard ‘just in case I ever change my mind’.
So I wonder if the Sigg bottles have the same ’suction/flow’ issue? Luckily they sell these bottles at one of my local stores. But then again if there is a problem cleaning it… and usually those cleaning tablets are made from nasty chemicals that require many rinses to get rid of the smell and taste…
Hi, I have two sigg water bottles, one small one big, the easiest way to clean them is to wash them out with hot water.. no need to use chemical soap tablets. ive had them for a couple years, and have never had any problems. Dont buy those plastic toppers.. theyre expenisve and break. Just go with the screw top they come with.
I forgot to mention. It’s easier to buy those bottles at a health food store. Sigg’s site is always down– it’s kool that they offer customized water bottles..but it takes forever to get them when ordered, and because of the order capacity that, that site recieves.. it’s always down from an overload of orders..
I also have a Klean Kanteen (similar to the Sigg). I bought it for $15. It works great!
I’m not sure what you mean about hexagonal structures in water. I don’t know how something like that can exist because the whole point of a liquid is that it’s fluid and there’s nothing holding the individual molecules together but weak van der Waal forces. They may temporarily form “hexagonal shapes” but they shouldn’t stay in a rigid structure or it wouldn’t be considered a liquid.
I don’t think sunlight hitting water is bad unless it’s in a plastic container (which would cause the leaking). Plastic bottle, if kept outta the sun, is probably not that dangerous either. Unless it’s one of those “single use” bottles and you reuse it lots and wash it over and over again with one of those scratchy bottle washers (that scratches off the protective coating, allowing for sun-less leaching).
But yeah, I totally agree about shatter-proof and light-weight bottles.. LOVE my Sigg..
If I see one of these, I’ll probably buy it, but I don’t think they’re sold where I live. I wonder how they know it doesn’t leach any chemicals.
I use a glass water bottle and naturally I don’t leave it out in the sun. The main problem is I’m scared of dropping it and it’s a little on the heavy side. But I feel really good about having it as opposed to a plastic one.
Kyle- check this article out: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/04/are-sigg-aluminum-bottles-bpa-free.php
Izzy- There’s a lot of research on the structure of water. In particular look up Dr Mu Shik Jhon.
I think after reading everything I can on these bottles, that I’ll pass on them seeing that they are made from aluminium with an internal plastic liner. If the plastic liner (which makes it about as safe as a plastic water bottle!) becomes damaged, then I’m risking exposure to aluminium as well!
I think I’ll try to track down Kleen Kanteen’s for the whole family - stainless steel and a much safer option…
Wow a Sigg bottle will set me back about $230 and Kleen Kanteen will do the same for around $265.Oh, I just converted it to US and it’s not that bad. Guess my currency is just bad huh.
Hey Kevin, I think something went amiss in your calculations…
I did a quick ebay search in case I cant find any stores in Oz selling Kleen Kanteens and there is an ebay store selling the 800ml for US$18.95 which converted is AUD$30 - then US$10 shipping…
I also prefer the Kleen Kanteens. They’re a bit less expensive, and they’re made of stainless steel w/o a plastic liner.
Yep! Dr Mu Shik Jhon’s website was one of the first ones I found but from what I had learned in chemistry classes it didn’t seem possible so I dug a little deeper and found a few sources that seem to debunk the structural water “myth”.

It just seems strange that sunlight would be harmful to water.. when oceans, rivers and lakes are teeming with life.
@kittty
My currency is like $6.37 to one US dollar. But my yoga place sells the bottles for the price I lsited which really does boil down to not too much in US minus any kind of shipping costs.
@kevin - Hi!
Oh wow! And I thought the Aussie dollar was bad enough! What part of the world are you in?
Gee, with what you are looking at paying, then me paying AUD$130 (incl. shipping) for 3, 1 for me, my hubby & my little girl isn’t much relatively speaking…
If I win the lottery I will buy you one in each colour!
Kitty xx >^..^<
Hei! A question about related issue. Unfortunately I`m still using plastic bottle, but your recommendation is great. Just one “but” - could I refrigerate water with those bottles? ( I`ve heard that melted water has the best structure for trinking, so I`m doing it. Besides I love water (and juice) with ice).
Anyway I`ll take your advice - truly useful.
Kitty- I had no idea you had kids! Wait this is the kitty who was a moderator in the forums? I live in the caribbean so the dollar here is very bad, thanks to my numbskull idiot baffoon President and Prime Minister.
Sorry Kevin, I am a different Kitty… sorry for the confusion! lol
don’t you hate it when 2 people have the same name?! I’ll reveal my true identity on the forum a bit later - I’m just snowed under with work atm…
The upside is how beautiful the caribbean is… that makes it all worthwhile…
But I am true to my word that if I win the lottery I will send you some bottles, I am a very generous person! I believe that if the universe deems me deserving of a huge lottery win then it is my pleasure to share my good fortune… I am very ‘peace, love & mung beans’!
I wish I was the wealthiest person on the planet because then I would share it with everyone I possibly could…
anonymos- refrigeration yes, but freezing no.
Kitty- Gee, thanks, lol. If my president and prime minister step down or perish soon…………I’ll think of something to send after I’m done celebrating.
But yeah one upside is that the caribbean is beautiful, palm trees and tropical flowers and fruits growing in my yard.
I am happy to say I purchased a bottle from my local super market, they are fantastic. My water stays cool and fresh, and I have a peice of mind that I am doing something that benefits my environment by simply chosing to drink from a stainless steel bottle rather than plastic.
Just heard that these bottles also contain the bisphenol A chemical…

I was out grabbing some snacks from whole foods today ’cause I was running a little low on Goji Berries (omg i know) and I noticed that the Whole Foods has a little stand of SIGG Bottles! I knew I had to have one, so i picked up this totally awesome looking metallic blue color. I cant wait to prance around school tomorrow and show it off to my friends, AND reap the health benefits as well!
A study has been done to show that the coating inside SIGG water bottles are made of the same plastic that leeches chemicals into the water. A safer bet would be Klean Kanteen bottles, which are purely metal and not coated inside. Just make sure you don’t keep your water in the bottles too long. If you don’t finish it one day, clean it out and let it dry completely and fill it up with fresh-tasting water!
I agree with this concept of bpa in plastic water bottles. This is a very serious issue & i agree with SIGG water bottles. I know a bit about this topic… Since i only skimed through this article, i don’t know if it is metal, aluminum or another kind of material. Please respond. Thanx… :3
