Treating Body Acne With The Right Exfoliant

polishing scrubI was in Biome in Brisbane the other day buying a friend a birthday present, and accidentally on purpose bought an exfoliant for myself. I couldn’t help it, this exfoliant looked amazing.

But unfortunately the ingredients read better than the actual experience of the product. I may as well have been exfoliating my skin with a handful of oatmeal, because that’s what it smelt and felt like. But at least it got me thinking. It made me realize how body exfoliants are probably the easiest skin care products to make at home yourself.

Check out my video review of the exfoliant, plus I give away a little more info on what makes a good body exfoliant-

I haven’t completely written off this product. I think it’s actually quite good as a facial exfoliant. I checked their website and this product actually IS a facial exfoliant, so I have no idea how I got that wrong. I guess body exfoliants usually come in these large jars so I got a little confused. I still however feel that it is a little too oatmeal heavy so there are other better facial exfoliants out there.

Honestly, I’ve never cured my body acne (shoulders) with any product! None worked. It just went away after 5-6 months, then it of course comes back.

I have moderate acne on my chest and shoulders, and I’ve noticed that when I do exfoliate those areas, it only gets more red and irritated. Also, some products I use for my facial acne will not do anything for my body acne, and other times the products I use for my body acne won’t help my facial acne! What should I do?

The best thing to do to body acne is NOTHING! That’s right! No lotions or scrubs, just wash with water, not even soap… everything just makes it worse… modify your diet first, cut out all sugar and toxins and you’ll see a major improvement… then once your skin is clear just use a gentle salt scrub once a week to exfoliate to remove dead dry skin… don’t even use moisturisers on these acne prone body areas – at best hydrate with a pure aloe vera gel and drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside…

I definitely found that any face products, especially face acne products only exacerbated breakouts on my chest and the best thing for it was nothing at all!

A beauty therapist I saw in the past told me she was prone to back acne and when she used anything on it, it only got worse and the best thing was to use nothing at all, not even soap… It works! ;)

Sweat is another thing you can look at, I think I’ve written an article about this – http://www.highonhealth.org/is-soap-giving-you-body-acne/ and http://www.highonhealth.org/how-to-cure-back-and-body-acne/

Also I’ve heard stress that you hold around your upper back and shoulders can contribute.

I was in my local health store a few weeks ago and found a bar of soap for body and facial acne called ‘Desert Essence’. I forgot that I had it because I bought some Oxy face wash around the same time I bought it and started using Oxy instead. It contains tee trea oil and aloe vera, and makes my skin feel very clean. It does dry my face out a bit if I use it twice a day, but it doesn’t burn my skin or make it feel irritated. I just have to moisturize more. I’ll use it for the next few days and see what happens, and if it works I’ll let every one know! Cross your fingers and pray!

Hi Fran

I know this has nothing to do with the scrub. But I can’t help but say I love those walls ! They are great I would love that in my flat ! xx

Dont use scrub while you’re having back acne.. Instead use a mild soap in the morning and an antiseptic soap at night… after that just apply some baby powder … worked for me !! :)

I’ve been following your blog for a while now and I’m glad I’ve found back acne articles cause I was looking for them a year or two back and didn’t find them. Good job!

Anyway, I’ll just share that I now regularly use kojic soap for my back acne. Kojic is a by-product of sake, which is japanese rice wine. It makes you exfoliate. I really like it, and it’s really affordable. :)
