Using Estro-Sense In Combination With The Birth Control Pill To Clear Acne

estro-senseI’ve already blogged a bit in the past about using the birth control pill to clear acne at a surface level, but have not mentioned the supplement Estro-Sense before.

This supplement can be used in conjunction with the birth control pill to help break down the estrogen in your body. This means a reduction in side effects for those of us girls who experience them while on the pill (nausea, fatigue, brain fog, depression, etc).

It is not my job to tell you whether or not you should be taking the birth control pill to clear your acne. This is a personal decision you will need to make for yourself. As I mentioned in the video, you need to keep in mind that the pill is just clearing the acne at the surface level, so the root cause will still be there and may possibly still be there once you go off the pill which means the acne may return.

But I also understand that sometimes, and especially in cases of severe acne or a severe emotional response to your skin condition, a surface level treatment like this can be okay to give you the time and energy to focus on the root cause of your acne. But as I said, I’m just here to give you the facts but ultimately the decision is yours.

And for those of you who are considering taking the pill to clear your acne, please consult with your doctor on the best options available to you. There are some brands of the pill that do a good job at clearing the skin for most women, but there are brands of the pill that can make the skin worse so it’s important to get the best one.

A good friend of mine uses the Diane pill to treat her moderate facial acne(she has used this for quite a few years and is now 30). Her skin stays about 80-95% clear most of the time (which at times has tempted me to want to try it), BUT the few times she has tried to stop taking the pill she has had HORRIBLE breakouts not only on her face but also on her chest and back…each time this has happened she always breaks down and goes back on the pill. She definitely feels dependent on the pill to keep her skin clear, but is torn because she wants to regain a ‘natural’ hormonal cycle for future children and wants to avoid any of the health risks associated with using this pill.

I think taking pills like Diane to treat acne definitely have serious benefits and risks…this is a matter that is worth taking the time to research in order to make an informed decision… and to become aware of the warning signs of any complications related to the medication.

The use of Diane35 seems to be quite controversial. It is supposed to be reserved to treat only very severe acne conditions that do not respond to antibiotics and should be discontinued 3-4 menstrual cycles after the skin condition clears (as it has been linked to a greater risk of blood clots) but is commonly prescribed for much minor conditions.

Hi Fran,

My Naturopath actually prescribed me with Estro-sense to take alone with a couple of other supplements. He said it is used to break down all hormones and help the body to rid of any excess. This worked for me for a couple of months (taking 2 a day) but of course when I stopped taking this the acne has come back. I definitely agree with the stress factor being a big impact on the skin, my skin is heaps worse when I am stressed, usually around that time of the month anyway. I guess my liver can not handle my crazy hormones.

Thank you for the blog about this as I was considering the pill but everytime I get close to taking it, my mind tells me to stick to the natural path.

I’m taking the DIM supplement (naturally derived anti-androgen/anti-”bad”estrogen) since I think my acne is caused by excess testosterone and/or bad estrogen.

This combined with eating better, taking a multivitamin, wearing less makeup, and just relaxing in general (I’m on summer break and pretty stress free) has really made my skin clearer than it’s been in a very long time :)

I also consider that perhaps I am just growing out of my acne as its been 4 years now, since I was 18.

Love the site Fran :)

I have had a similar experience to Tina. I have come off the pill which I was prescribed as a teenager for acne because I was suffering terrible depression. Now my acne has come back as bad as it was when I was a teenager, 9 years ago! I dont know what to do, but I am considering going back on it to ge rid of my acne because my level of depression is probably the same due to the acne.
Im going to give some of your treatments/techniques a go, so thanks!

Hi Kylie, it’s available in Brisbane but you’ll need to either get it from a naturopath or get a health store to order it in for you.
