Why Stillness Is So Important … For Me … & Maybe You Too?

Some people feel that I’m blessed to be living the life that I do. And while I believe that’s true (I am blessed) it was also a choice, not an accident. I was once in a very high paid professional job that I chose to leave because I felt there was a lot more to life. When I left that job I even remember saying, “I don’t care if I go and work in a cafe for a while, life has to be better than this”.

I could still be in that 9-5 professional job now with an extraordinary income. But I’m not, and I’m so incredibly happy that I took the risk and ended up exactly where I am now. More in the video…

[..YouTube..] I’ve been out of the center for awhile now. I actually do what I love(brazilian jiu jitsu) everyday but it’s tearing me on the inside, I feel worn out and there’s no joy or happiness. What has helped me in the past to get back in my center was surfing in the late afternoon near sunset. I think I need that soon, if not now.

[..YouTube..] I haven’t commented on recent videos b/c frankly, most of us don’t have the luxury of being able to take it easy. All would like to and yeah, we would be more relaxed, but it isn’t an option for most. I do, however, have the luxury of being able to take it easy in my own life at this current time. It’s very nice. I wish it could be like that forever. But it also means poverty. So, it’s a trade-off, ja? But I do think I would go for poverty and peace over riches any day. Interesting vid. ~Mary

[..YouTube..] For me finding my center, means being in piece all day, with my attitudes, thoughts, words and actions. It means that I find something positive in every situation….it’s not easy but with time I feel that I am getting better at that. If I know that I have something to do that day that’s not my favorite thing, then I will do it the first thing in the morning, so I would not have to think about it all day… It’s done and now I can concentrate on things I enjoy…

withou2- mmmmm surfing near sunset, beautiful. Interesting that I’m reading this now after just spending the last hour fantasising about the ocean! And you’re so right, surfing does that. It snaps us almost immediately into the present moment while we’re riding a wave. And the power of the waves are so cleansing… double awesome.

thebluestofpeas- Yeh I realize that most of us don’t. It was a choice for me but I also acknowledge that there may come a day that I have family and life is not quite as peaceful anymore! It was certainly a choice to go with less monetary abundance for me. But I am one million.. or maybe infinitely sure that I made the right decision.

Fran, I have a question related to the origin of your healthy lifestyle. My question is how did it begin? Was there a point where you just knew that it was time to make a change or was it something that developed over a long time? I ask because I know this is the right lifestyle for me as someone who deals with stress and bad health, but for whatever reason, I always find a reason to not follow it. Do you have any tips to help me start off on the road to health and happiness?

Hi Michael, I had great parents who took me to a Chinese Herbalist and Naturopath as our family doctors when I was a kid so it was always a part of my life. And my mum has always been cool with avoiding chemicals in food and cleaning product. But it was a naturopath that I visited in my early twenties who really set things off. He told me that my diet was “poor” (it was back then) and I began making immediate changes that day. And THEN when I watched the documentary Food Matters I turned into a full on health geek.

Watching documentaries is a good way to get you motivated. Follow David Wolfe, he’s powerful at making us feel excited about being healthy. And recognize and realize that the worse you eat the more little health problems there will be that you’ll be dealing with. If you eat well MOST of the time then you’re just going to have better skin, you’ll sleep better, have more energy, and most importantly .. your moods will be more stable x

Hi Fran,

Another really wonderful video! I was wondering Fran if maybe you had some useful tips and methods to share about how to overcome a fear of food, I’ve been having a really difficult time eating lately, because my skin is so sensitive I get very nervous about how everything I eat effects it, almost expecting a consequence which can in itself create just that. I’d love to hear what your thoughts are. Thanks so much. Lots of love!

[..YouTube..] All of your videos somehow relate to something in my life. Every video has relevance to something going on with myself. I just got back from a vacation in nature, and now i’m back in nyc, and I need to bring that energy back with me. Thanks

Hey Fran, this is Chris from the class you’ve been giving. I find your viewpoint very similar to mine on a number of issues– we must’ve read similar authors and pondered similar thoughts along the way. It was actually on a trip I took around Australia a few years ago when I learned some of these lessons. All right then, just wanted to say that I enjoyed your thoughts on moving with the flow of the current we call life.

HI Fran. My comment is for the recent video you just posted about the woman in the mountains you got to spend time with. I was wondering, did you talk with her and find out what she thinks about her life? I know you were talking about how you view her life/house/surroundings as very simple and centering compared with your old/current? life….. but maybe she feels differently about her life and it is a bit of just your perception….. dont’ know just wondering. Take care, I truly am benefiting from all your wonderful videos. Thank you

Hi Elizabeth … you know what, I thought about that and honestly I don’t feel that we’d be able to fully understand each others lives, or even understand them a little bit. But what we did notice was that she seemed to have a lot less ego than us. The way she just picked up the guitar and couldn’t play, and just sung, and just danced.. it was completely without ego. And yeh, I do live a very blessed life in comparison and I’m sure she has much hardship.. but perhaps my complicated and “luxurious” lifestyle brings with it the kind of drama that she never has to experience. Oooofff just so complicated and so different to even comprehend!

[..YouTube..] My house is my sanctuary. We moved here after a very stressful year. We’d lost our home, jobs, some friends in hurricane Katrina. We lived through it but then found ourselves in need of sanctuary. We painted all the rooms in the house different shades of green. We have lots of trees outside and started a garden.Staying home in this green place feeds my soul everyday. Nikki
